Flooded Basement Cleanup in Missouri: How to Do It Safely

Missouri's heavy spring storms and flash floods send water into basements every year. Cleaning up well in the first days is what keeps a bad day from turning into a mold problem.

The Short Answer

Turn off power only if you can do it from a dry spot, stay out of standing water near live circuits, remove water gradually, then dry everything fast. Porous materials that stayed wet for a day or more are usually removed. Call a professional for sewage, deep water or large areas.

Safety First

Water and electricity are dangerous together. Wear boots and gloves, and avoid contact with water that may be contaminated by sewage or runoff.

Removing the Water

A pump or wet vacuum removes standing water. Lower it gradually rather than all at once, because the soil outside can still press on the walls. Our flooded basement cleanup team has truck-mounted equipment for deep water.

Drying and What to Throw Away

Run fans and dehumidifiers. Carpet, padding, insulation and soaked drywall often cannot be saved. Photograph items before disposal for insurance.

Preventing a Repeat

Clean gutters, extend downspouts, check the sump pump and look at the grade. Read what happens in the first hours in our first 24 hours guide.
